CV troubles
December 18, 2007
Well now I have a lil’ bit of time to myself I thought I would start polishing up my CV. I started lookingfor placements through a site called Creative Pool, its rather good site but it doesn’t actually tell you where you are applying for so the cover letter is fairly pointless, I accidentaly sent out copies of a dud CV to a potential employer.

Computer Animation definition
December 11, 2007
Computer animation : The technique of using computers to generate moving pictures. Some systems can achieve this in real-time (25 frames per second-or in the USA 30fps), but the majority of animation is created one frame at a time and then edited into a continuous sequence. Very sophisticated programs are required to perform the tasks of movement, fairing, perspective, hidden-surface removal, colouring, shading and illumination, and as the trend increases towards more realistic images, faster computers are needed to process the millions of computations required for each frame. The term “computer animation” covers a broad range of subjects, but overall can be defined as the creation of moving images through the use of computers. These images can be created in either a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space, and can be applied to web design, user interface design, application development, video games, movies, special effects, cartooning, and many others. – http://www.motioncapturestudios.com/mocap_glossary.htm

Myplace.com – Users have the ability to tag specific locations through gprs/gps mobile devices – their phones.
A picture is taken, then the program takes a data feed from the phone as well as an optional description from the user. It then uploads the data to an online database which would be viewable on Myplace.com
The online database is stored on Myplace.com. Once the user has uploaded the data they can then view it by logging on to their homepage at Myplace.com, this will detail where they’ve been. A google map application is displayed, with areas where the user has been being revealed, whilst other unvisited areas remain unseen. Upon this map are all the location points generated by the user, who has an option of networking with other people to find locations of interest or additional information regarding visited locations.
The allication generates a sense of discovery, due to the fact that their map is mostly dark to start with and the more the travel and network the more they learn. They also have the ability to define their world by tagging information to different locations.

Essay proposal for Joasia
December 3, 2007
Animation means, literally, to breathe life into some thing. A transformation is involved, what was still now moves. - http://www.infed.org/animate/b-animat.htm
I am going to look at how animation has evolved to the point where actors are now playing themselves in a 3d environment i.e Beowulf and Heavenly Sword for the PS3.
Motion capture is defined as “The creation of a 3D representation of a live performance.” in the book Understanding Motion Capture for Computer Animation and Video Games by Alberto Menache. This is in contrast to animation that is created ‘by hand’ through a process known as keyframing.Motion capture (AKA Mocap) used to be considered a fairly controversial tool for creating animation. In the early days, the effort required to ‘clean up’ motion capture data often took as long as if the animation was created by an animator, from scratch. Thanks to hard work by the manufacturers of motion capture systems as well as numerous software developers, motion capture has become a feasible tool for the generation of animation.
Software tools for working with motion-captured data, such as MotionBuilder , have evolved to the point where animators now have the means to edit and blend takes from multiple capture sessions and mix and match them with keyframed animation techniques; allowing great control of style and quality of final output, for anything ranging from realistic to ‘cartoony’ motion. – http://www.metamotion.com/motion-capture/motion-capture.htm
This site has developed a body suit which captures the movements of the wearer then imports this into a modeling program where it can be assigned a virtual body. This suit has been used in Halo 3. The only draw back is that it doesn’t capture facial movements but with a game like Halo there are many characters which dont need a face.

What is a Killer App?
December 1, 2007
Killer app; a term that migrated from software development to online. It is nothing more than tech-talk for the eternal search for next big idea. – http://www.expedite-email-marketing.com/
Killer App; is a contraction of “killer application” which means the most prominent, or useful application. It was widely decided that email was the original killer app of the 90’s. – http://www.affiliatewhitepages.com/marketingterms_k.htm
One of the first (if not the first) killer application in video games was without a doubt Star Raiders, released in 1979 on cartridge for the Atari 8-bit computer. Customers purchased Atari computers just so they could play that game. The same happened a year later when Atari released Space Invaders on the successful Atari 2600. The VCS became a sell-out over Christmas. The Game Boy saw Tetris, and following Game Boy iterations saw the highly successful Pokémon series. Nintendo 64 saw much success with the releases of Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Software developers of new platforms now tend to focus considerable effort and funds into discovering or creating the next “killer app” for a given technology. - www.techspec.com
