Today there was a news post about a new development in nanotechnology which “enables water repellant materials to bond chemically to fibres on a nano level”. Apperently it can be used on everydax objects as well as clothing, it always comes back to consumerism. If the companies did inherit this new technology surely profits would drop. The need to replace these produces would drop, its exactly like using the battery, if companies created self sustaining products there would be no need for a battery this would lead to a massive loss in profits and eventually there wouldnt be a need for it.

With the development of such technologies will there really be any need for it. Of course it would be nice when you go on a nice walk around Dartmoor or wherever your feet wont get wet. But in practical daily use would it really be worth forking out extra (cause we all know you’ll pay through the nose for this “feature”) because the technology doesnt protect it from any other damage. We’ve got materials which can stop tears and cuts or whatever and yet companies wouldnt incorporate them into their products simply because there wouldnt be any need to replace them. Companies want you to replace your products, there designed to break and tear. So eventually you’ll come back to them with the “newer” updated better product.

It’ll be a wasted technology which will be used in camping. Not in everday use. too expensive.

Zeitgeist the movie

August 20, 2008

“…people will not take what is said
in the film as the truth, but find out for themselves, for truth is not told, it is realized.” – http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/statement.htm

Zeitgeist the Movie is split into 3 different sections, the first religion followed by conspiracy theories surrounding the “terrorist attacks on the WTC” and the last section is on Money (the U.S). I watched this movie a while ago, and it constantly plays on my mind. Everything that crops up religiously either in the news or online always has this sort of definite ‘you must do this’ or ‘that is wrong is the eyes of…’ I’d just like to point out that I dont take the movie literally or as the whole truth, however, the points made seem to allow us to make our own decision. The way the information is presented, I admit is like your being led by hand through a process of description. Which in its own way helps the viewer gain a clearer way of some of the things which seem to be left out from everywhere, and the weird thing is you only have to do a simple google search and the comparisons are obvious (This is relating to the religious section of the Zeitgeist movie).

I highly recommend this movie to anyone, more importantly anyone how is unsure of the information that they have on religion as this helps to match a few things up. I have tried to get ‘believers’ to watch it, someone in my university course is a JW and they refuse to watch it. Naievity on their part…

First week placement

August 18, 2008

First week has finished and now starting my second! The majority of last week was meet and greet, we had 2-3 photography sessions which took us through an in depth look at photography. We also had the chance to get a taster of some very easy video editing. By the end of the week we had made a visit to Exeter campus to have a look at the other division of Peninsula, again more of a meet and greet. The highlight of the week was friday when we went to the Tamser science park, where there is a dedicated building to Peninsula, there they have CT scan machines, PET machines and random doctors walking around. For the size of the building there are 6 staff and 20 students. The way the computers are now able to manipulate the body in full 3D which is specific to the persons body, its phenomenal! I dont quite understand the wait that patients go through, the scan itself takes about 30 mins max depending on how tall you are.
